Peacefully on Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, Winona Mabel Tierney, 80, beloved wife of the late Jim Tierney, passed away at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
“Noni” was born Aug. 5, 1921 in Douglas, Man. to the late Walter and Elizabeth Avis, and moved to Fort Frances as a young child, where she resided all of her life. She met and married James Leslie Tierney on Jan. 17, 1948.
She will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her daughter, Pattie, son-in-law, Dr. Barry Anderson, and granddaughters, Kirsten (boyfriend, Darryl) and Erica (boyfriend, Mitch); and son-in-law, Kawuwa Kanoma, and granddaughters, Michelle and Shantelle of Calgary, Alta.
She also leaves her “very close” sister, Annie Matthews; brothers, Walter (Shirley) Avis and Brian (Mona) Avis; brother-in-law, Alan (Kaye) Tierney; and her extended “outer” family, Daisie and Jim McInnis, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Mom was always smiling and had a friendly conversation ready for anyone. She loved people and life. There were never any unkind words spoken from her lips.
Many of you will remember her for her generous hugs, kisses, and thank-you’s. Her fabulous pies, chocolate chip cookies, and the famous “lemon bisque” to which she baked often and shared generously.
Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. R. Nugent and the nurses and staff at CCU at La Verendrye Hospital. A very special thank you to nurses Diane Lipinski and Linda Turgeon.
At her request, cremation has taken place.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002 at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Anglican Church in Fort Frances, with Fr. Wayne McIntosh officiating.
Interment will take place in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances at a later date.
Honourary pallbearers will be Roy Forsythe, Bert Lavigne, Roy Burrell, and Jim McInnis. “Special” pallbearer will be Walter (Twoonie) Turgeon.
In memoriam donations may be made to “Palliative Care,” La Verendrye Hospital, 110 Victoria Ave., Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 2B7, or the charity of your choice.
