It is with great sadness that the family of Marco Campagnaro announce his sudden passing on Thursday, July 4, 2002 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
Marco was born Nov. 12, 1921 in Bassano del Grappa, Italy to the late Gaetano and Maria Campagnaro. He started working in a foundry at the age of 14 in Bassano del Grappa.
He joined the war effort in 1943, serving until 1945, returning home and joining the foundry once again. He was united in marriage to Eugenia Campagnolo on April 27, 1946.
Marco immigrated to Canada in April, 1953, and his family followed in 1957. Upon arriving in Canada, he settled in Churchill, Man., where he worked as a carman for CN. Marco also helped establish the town by constructing houses as well as other projects.
In 1968, he received a promotion to car inspector and moved his family to Fort Frances.
Marco retired from the railway in 1978 and then began his second career at the Rainy Lake Hotel as a maintenance man; later, he began a third career at K & M Trucking as “The Supervisor.”
The job he loved the most was to help family and friends whenever and wherever he was needed.
Marco received gold medals from the Government of Italy in recognition of his outstanding work record in Canada as a shining example of a successful immigrant. He was very proud of being Italian and he also was a very proud Canadian as was evident by his display of the Canadian flag.
Marco’s immediate and extended family and friends were always his top priority, and he shared life to the fullest with them near or far.
He is survived by his wife, Eugenia; son, Guy Campagnaro and wife, Janice Caswell; daughter, Carla and husband, Jim Kibiuk; grandchildren, Christina, Damian, and Evan; brother, Ernesto and wife, Natalina Campagnaro; sisters, Sandra and Paolina Campagnaro; sister-in-law, Angelina Campagnaro; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles in Italy.
