It is with great sadness that our family announces the sudden passing of Alfred Henderson on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
Alfred was born June 1, 1953.
Alfred was predeceased by his father, Allan Henderson Sr.; mother, Edith Henderson (Shebagegit); maternal grandmother, Annie Shebagegit (McGinnis); paternal grandparents, Alfred and Madeline Henderson; and uncle, David Henderson.
Alfred loved spending time with family and friends on the pow-wow trail, and at bingo and casinos. Those who knew Alfred knew him best by the funny stories and jokes he shared.
Alfred enjoyed watching movies, especially a good western. He also took pride in sharing traditional teachings, and visiting the inmates in the Thunder Bay area.
In his youth, Alfred played Muskie football.
Prior to his illness, Alfred was employed as a traditional healing co-ordinator. He also worked within various occupations, such as logging and drilling, as well as serving on numerous boards and band council.
Alfred was well-known and respected wherever he went.
Alfred is survived by his siblings, Stewart, James (Dorothy), Janice (Edwin), Allan Jr., Donna (Robert), Alana, John (Darlene), Joseph, Derrick, Beverley (Desmond), Alex, and Brenda (Pierre).
Also surviving are his four step-children, whom he considered as his own, Treena and Charles Shabaquay, and Sarah and Lance Heald.
Also surviving are Alfred’s special friend, Bernice; uncle, Willis; aunts, Mildred and Mary; as well as numerous grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and one great-grandchild.
A traditional wake will be held at Stanjikoming First Nation on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007 at 5 p.m.
Funeral services will be officiated by Elder Harry Windego on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007 in the morning at Stanjikoming First Nation.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Necan, Harvey Jordan, Norman Jordan, Julian Jordan, Cameron Dokis, Kevin Johnson, Ron Kingbird, and E.J. Smith.
Honorary pallbearers will be Arnold Pelly, Sylvester Shotley, Jerome Whitman, Mike Henderson, Willis McGinnis, Elvis DeBungie, Ken Kakeeway, Ron Knutski, Gilbert Smith, Joseph (J.P) Morrison, and Joe Morrison.
Our family would like to express our thanks to those who visited Alfred at the hospital. We’d also like to thank Dr. Nelson, Dr. Moorhouse, and the nurses at La Verendrye Hospital, the TBRHSC Renal Dialysis Unit, the Fort Frances Tribal Area Health Authority, and Gizhewaadiziwin Health Access Center for the special care they provided.
In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations can be made to the TBRHSC Fort Frances Satellite Renal Dialysis Unit.
