Frederick (Doug) Norris Beaushene, 76, of Nestor Falls, Ont., passed away Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003 at the La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
He was born May 6, 1926 in Alberton, Ont. to the late Fred and Irene Beaushene. At an early age, Doug along with his family moved to Nestor Falls, where he has lived since.
At the age of 18, Doug enlisted and served with the Canadian Armed Services in the Ottawa area from 1944 until his discharge in 1946. Following his service, he returned to Nestor Falls, where he worked for many years guiding and managing Cundy’s Whispering Pines Resort.
On March 17, 1951, Doug and Catherine Bowman were united in marriage. They raised their family in the area they loved and shared a wonderful life together for 52 years.
Doug and Kay bought Nestor Falls Bait & Tackle in 1963, and later built and owned Anglers Pro Shop. Prior to this, he had worked in logging and fur trapping, and for many years had the school bus run for the Nestor Falls Public School.
He also very much enjoyed flying his own plane, which he had done for many years.
During his retirement, he spent many happy hours doing woodworking, hunting, fishing, and flying, as well continued his trapping.
Doug always loved his community and was deeply involved in a myriad of issues concerning it. He was the current president of the Nestor Falls Airport. As a member of the Kenora Trappers’ Council, he had the longest record of owning a trap line and for trapping.
He also had a lifetime membership in the Bait Fishermen Association, and continued to be an active member of the Nestor Falls United Church.
As well, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Emo. He was appointed to the original Ministry of Natural Resources Moose Allocation Board as an advisory member.
He was predeceased by one brother, George Beaushene.
Doug is survived by his wife, Catherine “Kay” of Nestor Falls, Ont.; one daughter, Judy Wilde (George Greig) of Ottawa, Ont.; three sons, Ray (Linda) of Fort Frances, Ont., Doug (Dori) of Red Lake, Ont., and Dave (Michelle) of Nestor Falls, Ont.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He also is survived by one brother, Russ Beaushene of Nestor Falls, Ont.; two sisters, Evelyn Widgren of Nestor Falls, Ont., and Mildred and husband, Clayton Thompson, of Merritt, B.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Nestor Falls United Church in Nestor Falls. Pastor Peggy Mason will officiate, with interment in the Norman Cottam Memorial Garden Cemetery in Nestor Falls.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Nicole and Bryan Beaushene, Myndi (Kelly) Siemens, Jonathan and Ashley Beaushene, Joanna (Steve) Nolan, Doug (Tarah) Wilde, and Michael (Sonya) Beaushene.
Honourary pallbearers will be Ron and Ida Eastwood, Joe and Lou Cayou, Alex and Adele Markowski, Marilyn and Roy Brown, Jack and Leona Forsythe, Bill and Karen Rademacher, and Earl and Lou Rademacher.
