QUENTIN DOUGLAS MacKAY
It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of Quentin Douglas MacKay on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007 at Kingston General Hospital in Kingston, Ont.
Doug is survived by son, Jeffery (Debbie) McKay of Sudbury, Ont.; daughter, Colleen (Larry) Pattison of Kingston, Ont.; and stepdaughter, Genny (Ed) Whatley of Nipigon, Ont.
He also is lovingly remembered by grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Doug was predeceased by his parents, William and Agnes MacKay; wife, Mina; stepson, Gerald Stewart; and brother, William MacKay.
Doug was born in Fort William, Ont. on Feb. 25, 1919 and participated in a variety of sports as a young man. He served with the RCAF during World War II and joined the OPP upon his return from Europe.
Doug was among the first 1,000 to join the OPP (badge # 811).
Doug served 35 years with the OPP in a number of detachments throughout Northwestern Ontario until his retirement as sergeant of the Emo detachment in 1978. He always felt a strong affinity for the OPP and maintained his ties with serving and retired colleagues after his retirement.
Doug moved to Thunder Bay, Ont. in 1994 and most recently to Kingston in November, 2006 to be near family.
Doug’s deep, infectious laugh and sharp wit will be remembered by all who knew him.
Doug was a dedicated member of the Rotary Club, where he achieved 25 years’ perfect attendance and was made a Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of his community work.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 60 years, the Scottish Rite (32nd degree) for 57 years, and the Royal Canadian Legion for 65 years. He also was a member of the Shriners (AAD, Khartum Temples), where he worked with crippled children and burn unit projects.
A Masonic service, conducted by Connaught Lodge #511, will be held at Jenkins Funeral Home on Friday, Jan. 26, 2007 at 7 p.m.
Friends then will be received from 7:15-9 p.m.
The funeral service will take place Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007 at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Brodie Street in Thunder Bay.
In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations to the Shriners Burn Unit or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
