FRANCIS (FRANK) JOHN NEWSTEAD

Surrounded by his family, Francis (Frank) John Newstead, 89, of Reef Point, Fort Frances, Ont., passed away at University Hospital in Saskatoon, Sask. on Thursday, May 29, 2003.
Born in Winnipeg, Man. to George and May Newstead, Frank remained there until 1936 when he moved to Kenora, Ont. Reading, travelling, hunting, and fishing were among his favourite pursuits. Sailing being another, he worked diligently with others to initiate the LOWISA Sailing Regatta still held annually in Kenora.
As an employee of Ontario Central Airways and later as director of the Kenora District Tourism Office, Frank was well-known throughout the area.
While in Kenora, he was an active member of Pequonga Lodge #414 of the Masonic Order.
In 1940, Frank married Audrey Mary Heron in Winnipeg. Their two sons, Robert G. (Joy) of Ed-monton, Alta. and Richard J. (Susan) of Swift Current, Sask., survive, along with five grandchildren, Scott, Andrew (Dalene), Mark (Trina), Jill Newstead, and Laura (Colin) Jackson; three great-grandchildren, Audrey, Natasha, and Tyler Newstead; and two nephews, John (Verlie) of Winnipeg, Man. and William (Les) Donald of Rich-mond, B.C.
Also surviving are Frank’s partner of 21 years, B.E. June Smith; and her son, Campbell.
Frank was predeceased by his parents; wife; only brother, Cecil; sister-in-law, Florence Donald; and brother-in-law, Jack Heron.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no commemorative services.
