JOHN DAVID SEDGWICK

John David Sedgwick was born Dec. 19, 1921 in Hutchinson, Mn. He married Betty Nelson, his wife of 60 years, in Minneapolis, Mn. in 1942.
In 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Marines and saw action in the South Pacific, Solomon Islands, and in Guam, where he was wounded in action in July, 1944.
Upon discharge, he enrolled in forestry at the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1949. While at university, he was elected to the Minnesota Delta Chapter of Xi Sigma Pi, an honourary fraternity.
John had an active business career in millwork and window sales. In 1956, his company sent him to Canada to open the territory. Because of constant travel and absence from a growing family, he enrolled in Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont. and began teaching in 1958.
John taught science and math in the Dryden and Fort Frances high schools, retiring in 1980. He also served as chair of the Fort Frances Public Library board for many years.
John had a lifetime love of reading and the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, prior to snowmachining and pwc’s and waterskis. For the last few years, he walked in town everyday—no matter the weather.
John is survived by his wife, Betty; daughters, Merribeth (Raymond) McFarlane of Winnipeg, Man., and Margaret (Lawrence) Wilton of Dryden, Ont.; and son, David (Margaret) of Fort Frances, Ont.; grandchildren, Scott McFarlane, Vanessa (Joey) Wilson, and Hilary and Eric Sedgwick; and great-granddaughters, Diamond and Jade Wilson.
At John’s request, there will be no memorial service.
In memoriam donations may be made to the Friends of the Fort Frances Public Library or the Fort Frances Friends of Animals, c/o Green Funeral Home, Box 427, Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3M8.
And when yourself with silver foot shall pass among the guests star-scatter’d on the grass, and in your joyous errand reach the spot where I made one—turn down an empty glass! (Omar Kyayyam)
