It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
George Albert Cates, 94, passed away peacefully at Rainycrest Home for the Aged in Fort Frances, Ont. on Monday, Oct. 6, 2003.
George was born Feb. 27, 1909 in Detroit, Mich., U.S.A. He immigrated to Canada at the age of three, settling with his parents and siblings in the Emo, Ont. area.
George worked at various jobs during his lifetime, including bush work, guiding, and mining exploration. He then spent many happy retirement years with his loving wife, Jean, at their farm north of Emo.
He was united in marriage 68 years ago, on Oct. 3, 1935, to the former Georgina “Jean” Victoria Smith, who survives along with his loving children, Eric (Shirley) Cates, Allan (Lenore) Cates, Grace (George) Bird, Glenda (Louis) Quesnel, and Linda (Morris) Begin; 14 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving is his brother, Melvin Cates of Hurkett, Ont.
George was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Ellen Cates; sisters, Grace Glad and Marion McDonald; and brothers, Francis, Glen, and Earl.
A funeral service will be held Friday, Oct. 10, 2003 at 2 p.m. from Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, Ont., with Rev. Marietta Marshall officiating.
A private interment will follow the service.
Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. prior to the funeral service.
Pallbearers will be George Bird, Morris Begin, Louis Quesnel, Luc Quesnel, Douglas Cates, and Gilles Quesnel.
Honourary pallbearers will be all of George’s wonderful friends.
In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations may be made to Rainycrest Home for the Aged Memorial Fund (East Wing), 550 Osborne St., Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3T2.
You never really left us . . . nor have you travelled far.
Just entered God’s garden . . . and left the door ajar.
Our family chain has been broken . . . and nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one . . . the chain will link again.
In our hearts, there is a special corner . . . We keep it just for you.
As long as life and memory last . . . We’ll always love and remember you.
