MABEL ANTONIA GATE

The family of Mabel Antonia Gate is sad to announce her passing on Feb. 9, 2004 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. in her 94th year.
She was born Dec. 19, 1910 in Bergland, Ont., the only daughter of James Olaf Broman and Anna Christina Olsen.
Mabel lived her entire life in Bergland, with the exception of the last seven years when she resided at Rainycrest Home for the Aged in Fort Frances.
Mabel met Cecil Walter Gate in Sleeman, Ont. and she married him on Aug. 12, 1929 in Winnipeg, Man. They settled in Bergland and raised a large family of four daughters and eight sons.
She was a loving dedicated mother. She was active in her church and community. She served as a secretary in Relief Society and a Sunday School teacher. She was a lifetime member of the Women’s Institute.
War years in the 1940s were busy for the Institute. They knitted socks, sewed pyjamas, and made up packages for the soldiers overseas.
Grandma Mabel was a great cook. In later years, she worked as a cook in the tourist industry. Many will remember her pies and cinnamon rolls.
She loved to travel and read. Writing letters and compiling family history also was one of her favourite pastimes. Her photo collection is amazing.
Besides her own family, Mabel, with the help of her mother, raised her brother’s five children when he passed away in 1950. At the passing of her daughter, Doris, Mabel and Cecil raised her seven children. She willingly accepted this responsibility.
One of her greatest joys was having her children and grandchildren visit. They learned much from her and her loving ways.
Mabel was predeceased by her parents, James and Christina Broman; brother, William; husband, Cecil; two sons, Gary and Ronald; daughter, Doris; four grandchildren, Don Carswell, Melanie Mason and Nicole Gate, and Shirley McNally; and great-grandsons, Filip Johnson and Dane Wood.
She is survived by her children, Anne Carswell (Joe), Charles Gate (Dorothy), Larry Gate (Dianne), Bill Gate (Caroline), Joyce Jensen (Dell), Fred Gate (Nancy), Alfred Gate (Sheila), Keith Gate (Donna), and Elaine Beyak (Don); and daughter-in-law, Mert (Ron).
She also is survived by 18 grandsons; 20 granddaughters; 78 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
We will miss you mother, and await a day when we will meet you again. We will love you forever.
