Christine Sturdy

Mrs. Christine Sturdy passed away peacefully Thursday, May 8, 2003 at Rainycrest Home for the Aged in Fort Frances, Ont.
She is survived by her husband, Mr. George Sturdy; her three children, Mr. Arthur Parker of Victoria, B.C., Mrs. Shirley Boulden of Winnipeg, Man., and Mrs. Patricia Hancock of Ottawa, Ont.; and also by her four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Sturdy met her husband in 1952 when she was nursing at St.
Joseph’s Hospital in Winnipeg.
They married on Nov. 24, 1956 and set-up house in Fort Frances, at 706 Scott St., later moving to their home on First Street.
In 1980, Mrs. Sturdy became the first agent for the Winnipeg Sun newspaper. With her husband’s assistance, Mrs. Sturdy held this position for six-and-a-half years.
Prior to working for the Winnipeg Sun, Mrs. Sturdy had cooked at the Huddle Cafe and for the White Pine Inn lunch-room.
Mrs. Sturdy belonged to the Redwing Rebekah Lodge #109 of the International Order of Oddfellows Cascade Lodge #351 and, with her husband, the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #29. While with the Legion, she organized and cooked for several of the functions and weddings put on there.
Mrs. Sturdy also was an active member of the Fort Frances Lutheran Church, helping with their tea and sales as well as donating items for the sales.
Mrs. Sturdy’s garden was her pride and joy, and she spent many hours working in it. Her love of crocheting and knitting came a close second to her gardening, with many of the handcrafted items being welcome gifts for her children and grandchildren or donated to the organizations she belonged to.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 12, 2003 at 2 p.m.
at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, with Fr. Wayne McIntosh officiating. Interment took place in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances.
The Royal Canadian Legion Br.
#29 Colour Guard provided their tribute during the service.
Visitation was held Sunday, May 11, 2003 from 7 until 8 p.m. at Green Funeral Home. A Redwing Rebekah Lodge memorial service was held at 7:30 p.m.
Pallbearers were Vic Gustafson, Robert Maki, William Gadd, Allan Bedard, and Frederick Grozelle.
Honourary pallbearers were members of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #29 Colour Guard.
