Al W. Halvorsen

Al W. Halvorsen, 88, of R.R. # 2, Emo, Ont., passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, April 24, 2005 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
He was born Dec. 4, 1916 in Blackhawk, Ont. to the late Halvor and Anna Halvorsen. Al was a devoted husband of 59 years to Katherine, whom he married on Sept. 5, 1940.
He had lived all of his life in Rainy River District.
Al had worked mostly at farming and bushwork, but also was employed by various construction jobs. He also worked on the line crew for Ontario Hydro and was very handy at carpentry work.
A lover of music, Al played the violin and guitar at many country dances throughout the district is his younger years. Most of all, though, he loved his children and grandchildren, and was never to busy to help them when needed.
Dad had a very kind, quiet, gentle manner but also a good sense of humour. In his later years, he tried to teach us all to remain strong when we had to face sudden tragedies in our lives.
Al is survived by his daughter, Judy Armstrong (Jack Kendall) of Fort Frances, Ont.; sons, Danny (Carol) of Kakabeka Falls, Ont., Terry (Diana) of Nestor Falls, Ont., and Doug (Eila) of R.R. # 2, Emo, Ont.
Also surviving are six grandchildren, Wade Armstrong, Scott (Bev) Armstrong, Guy (Angie) Halvorsen , Cory (Jen) Halvorsen, Todd (Diane) Halvorsen, and Patti (Richard) Kelly; six great-grandchildren, Mathew Armstrong, Katherine Kelly, Bharat Kelly, Jessica Halvorsen, Krysten Halvorsen, and Aaron Halvorsen; three sisters-in-law, Irene Donnelly of Fort Frances, Ont., and Margaret Summers and Muriel Ross, both of British Columbia; three brothers-in-law, Don (Delores) Ross, Gordon Ross, and Sid (Eva) Ross, all of Fort Frances, Ont.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Katherine, on June 7, 1999; parents, Halvor and Anna Halvorsen; grandson, Bob Armstrong on June 6, 2003; three brothers, Fred (Liz) Halvorsen, Harry (Nora) Halvorsen, and Carl (Lottie) Halvorsen; five sisters, Katherine (Eli) Johnson, Rose (Tim) Lyons, Alice (Rocky) Wolfe, Hilda (Tom) Chamberlain, and Ethel Adams; four brothers-in-law, Herb Summers, Norman Ross, Delbert (Gladys) Ross, and Murray Donnelly; and two sisters-in-law, Odell Ross and Muriel Ross.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 28, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. Rev. Marietta Marshall will officiate, followed by interment in the Chapple Cemetery in Barwick, Ont.
The pallbearers will be Todd Halvorsen, Guy Halvorsen, Cory Halvorsen, Wade Armstrong, Scott Armstrong, and Richard Kelly.
