Edmund R. Liedke, 84, of River’s Edge Villa in International Falls, Mn., went home to be with his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005.
Ed was born Nov. 29, 1920 in Fabiandorf Province, Dangzig, Germany. He served in the German armed forces in the Panzer division during World War II on the Russian front from 1940-45.
In 1950, Edmund emigrated to the United States, travelling on the Queen Elizabeth I and landing at the port of New York. He began working on his uncle’s farm in Valley City, N.D. until moving to International Falls later that year.
He was hired on with Boise Cascade in the Insulite division, where he worked as a machine operator until his retirement in 1976 due to health problems.
Edmund ws united in marriage on Nov. 26, 1951 to the former Marianne Rathje, who also emigrated to the U.S. from Germany.
Ed’s love was fishing. He became a guide on Rainy Lake and spent many enjoyable days on the water, either guiding or fishing with his family and friends.
He also enjoyed hunting and travelling, and made many trips back to Germany.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in International Falls, and enjoyed many evenings reading and studying the Bible.
He was predeceased by his parents, Gustav and Amanda (Breske) Liedke; and his wife, Marianne Liedke (2004).
Surviving Edmund are his son, Dennis (Christa) Liedke of International Falls, Mn.; daughter, Rosemarie (Bill) York of Fort Frances, Ont.; and five grandchildren, Brian, Christina, and Dave York, and Angela and Matthew Liedke.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in International Falls. Visitation is one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery following the service.
In memoriam donations would be preferred to the St. Paul Lutheran Church.
