Carl (Gus) Anderson, 77, of 960 First St. E., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances.
He was born Sept. 5, 1928 in Skovde, Sweden to the late Carl and Emma Anderson.
Gus immigrated to Canada with his parents at the age of six months. The family eventually settled in Fort Frances, where he has lived since.
In his earlier years at age 14, Gus started working in the bush, cutting pulpwood for J.A. Stewart. Two years later, he began work for the Ontario-Minnesota Pulp and Paper Mill in Fort Frances, where worked until his retirement on Aug. 31, 1988.
On Sept. 10, 1949, he was united in marriage to the former Doris Cross, and together they raised their family of four children.
Gus was an active member of the Knox United Church, volunteering many hours while enjoying the fellowship of the congregation, and especially the U.C.W.
Gus was a self-taught artist who researched the masters and enjoyed painting landscapes, flowers, and experimenting with other mediums. His creative talents took him in many directions, including building model ships from his own original designs to building homes—including three houses, all within 100 feet of each other.
He appreciated music, especially classical and opera, loved to read, and was a keen history buff. Later in life, Gus discovered his culinary skills and created many delicious meals—often using his own original recipes.
In all, Gus was a very talented individual who was happiest sharing his gifts with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Gus is survived by his wife, Doris Anderson of Fort Frances, Ont.; four children, Barry Anderson and wife, Pat, of Fort Frances, Ont., Brian Anderson and Nancy Stinka of Bear Passage, Ont., Maureen and husband, Jim Gartshore, of Montreal, QC, and Carla and husband, Dale Hallquist, of Bridgeton, N.J.; nine grandchildren, Kirsten Anderson of Calgary, Alta. (Darryl Falzarano), Erica and husband, Mitch Chaboyer, of Winnipeg, Man., Tatum Anderson of Winnipeg, Man. (Dave Heinrichs), Rachel Anderson of Etobicoke, Ont. (Ryan Gustafson), Jennifer and husband, Robert Webster, of Trenton, Ont., Stephanie Gartshore of Scarborough, Ont. (David Sionit), Amy Gartshore of Montreal, QC (Doug Judson), and Matthew and Megan Hallquist of Bridgeton, N.J.; and two sisters, Vi Domanski of Fort Frances, Ont. and Joyce Sobeleski of Thunder Bay, Ont.
He also is survived by his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Victor and Mickey Cross, Bert and Delores Cross, Jennette Cross, Lorena Jaman, and Florence and Ed Lampi; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by one sister, Birgit Mercier; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Ray Mercier, Carl Domanski, Ed Cross, Ila Cross, Art Cross, Corrine Cross, Bill Cross, Joan Cross, Don Cross, and Jack Cross.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at Knox United Church in Fort Frances,with Mr. Jack Cameron officiating. Interment will take place in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances.
Honourary pallbearers will be Gus’ grandchildren.
