On Oct. 16, 2019, at approximately 3:05 p.m., an officer from the Highway Safety Division of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was on patrol on Highway 11/17, east of Balsam Street, in the City of Thunder Bay when the officer observed the driver of a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed.
The driver was observed to be driving in excess of 175 km/h in a posted 90 km/h zone.
The driver, a 36-year-old resident of North York, Ont., has been charged with Drive Motor Vehicle Perform Stunt – Speeding by 50 or more km/h contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.
The driver was also issued a seven-day licence suspension and the vehicle has been impounded for seven days.
Drivers are reminded that driving speeds of 50 km/hr or more over the posted speed limit face severe penalties including:
- Mandatory seven day licence suspension;
- Mandatory seven day vehicle impoundment;
- Minimum fine $2000 up to $10,000; and
- Six licence demerit points.
