Local resident and gardener John Pohanka was surprised when what he thought was a cucumber plant began to grow these strange, spiky yellow veggies. Opinions on what Mr. Pohanka has on his hands are divided: a neighbour thought he’d managed to grow a tomato-cucumber hybrid, while horticulturalists on the website Reddit claim it’s a variety known as a lemon cucumber. However, our own Gardening Guru Mel Mathieson says it’s simply a cucumber that didn’t get enough water during its growing phase, thanks to our hot and dry growing months this year.
