The Couchiching Raiders were able to take some of the bite out of the Sight & Sound Wolves.
The host Raiders used a two-run fifth inning to pull out a 5-3 win over the Wolves last Thursday night in a Rainy River District Fastball League make-up game for the one that was postponed back on July 9.
It was pretty well a pitcher’s duel between Sheldon Kelly Jr. of the Raiders and Murray Armstrong of the Wolves until the third inning.
Aaron Caul got aboard and made it all the way to second on a throwing error before coming around on a single to open the scoring for the Wolves (8-5).
That held up until the Raiders (9-6) struck back in their half of the fourth.
Mike Jourdain plated Chris Morrisseau with an RBI single before a two-run single helped Couchiching forge ahead 3-1.
But the Wolves struck right back with two runs in the fifth to knot it up again.
Seemingly unfazed, the hosts responded with the decisive bottom half.
Kelly Jr. crushed an RBI double to give his side the lead once again before a poor throw on an infield hit allowed another Raiders run to score to put them ahead by two.
Kelly Jr. hit Caul with a pitch and gave up a two-out triple in the seventh, but the Raiders were able to keep both runners from scoring and preserved their ninth win of the season.
Both Armstrong and Kelly Jr. went the distance for their teams on the pitching rubber.
In other make-up games last Thursday night, Jackson Arpin homered to help lift the Stratton Eagles to a 7-5 win over the Sabaskong Goldeneyes for the game that was postponed back on July 9.
Guy Arpin nabbed the win for the Eagles, who improved to 7-7.
Cecil and Eagle Copenace both homered while Darryl Beacham suffered the loss for the Goldeneyes (2-13).
Windey’s Warriors claimed a 9-5 decision over the host Northwest Bay Chieftains for the game that was postponed back on July 9.
Rob McGinnis garnered the pitching win for the Warriors (9-7) over Don Smith of the Chieftains (2-12).
Mat Godin clubbed an inside-the-park homer to pace the Dawson Tigers to a 9-7 win over the Rainy River Royals for the game that was postponed back on July 2.
Carl Big George nabbed the win for the Tigers (8-6) over Myron Armstrong of the Royals (8-6).
On Friday night, the Warriors rolled to a 7-0 shutout of the Goldeneyes in a make-up for the one that was postponed back on June 18.
McGinnis homered twice, including one inside-the-park, and also earned the pitching win in that one over Beacham of the Goldeneyes.
On Monday night, the Royals routed the Goldeneyes in make-up game for the one that was postponed back on July 4.
Fred Archie homered twice while Myron Armstrong also went yard to pace the Royals’ onslaught.
Armstrong also garnered the win over Beacham.
Last night and tomorrow night are to serve as make-up game nights.
The first round of the RRDFL playoffs then will follow once all the regular season games have been completed and final standings are confirmed.
