The local Northern Lights School of Skating will hold its first-ever skating exhibition, entitled “True North,” this Saturday at 2 p.m. at “The Duke” (Couchiching Arena).
Tickets cost $10 in advance/$12 at the door for adults, and $5 in advance/$8 at the door for kids 12 and under (those three and under are free).
Advance tickets are available at the Fort Frances Times’ office.
The exhibition will showcase the NLSS’ many talents from all of its skating programs.
Those on hand can expect the group numbers to represent a local attraction, events, and the northern lifestyle we embrace here in Fort Frances and our surrounding communities.
“Spectators can expect to see over 40 skaters, from the various programs with various abilities and skaters, aged from two-17, execute their skating skills in a fun and entertaining way,” noted NLSS director/owner Ashley Cumming.
“Furthermore, we also will be offering flowers and teddy bears for purchase that spectators [can] give to congratulate skaters on their hard work this season and final skate of the season.”
The canteen also will be open.
Cumming noted all of her skaters have been busy preparing for the event and are looking forward to showcasing their talent to the community.
“We have been busy and having lots of fun preparing group numbers over the last few weeks,” she remarked.
“Many skaters have been practising in the early mornings [6 a.m.] with excitement to prepare for this event.
“For the soloists, they have been practising all season as they will be performing their competitive freeskate programs,” Cumming added.
“We will be very busy in the hours leading up to the exhibition.”
Cumming also said the skating exhibition will be a regular event moving forward.
“We are planning on having an annual skating exhibition event as this gives skaters an opportunity to perform the skills they have developed throughout the season in a fun and creative manner for their families, friends, and the public to enjoy and support their progression,” she explained.
“It’s a way to come together to celebrate and end a great season.
“I am very proud of all the skaters for making NLSS’ first skating season wonderful and a great success,” Cumming lauded.
“Each skater, whether experienced or new to skating, has excelled and accomplished many personal achievements.
“I am honoured and proud of the local certified coaches, trainers, volunteers, supportive parents and passionate skaters, the Emo and Duke Arena staff, and Couchiching First Nation Band who came together to support the . . . Northern Lights School of Skating,” she added.
“Together we have created a skating family and empower youth to embrace the joy, opportunities, and many life skills attainable while learning to skate, train, or compete with various skating goals and dreams.”
