THUNDER BAY, ONT. — Fundraising efforts in support of the Ukrainian humanitarian crisis relief are being initiated by local businesses throughout the community and at one bakery, their signature pastry has become re-coloured to help out.

Once again, the popular persian pastry, synonymous with Thunder Bay, has undergone a colour switch from their familiar pink icing to blue and yellow to reflect the colours of the Ukrainian flag.

Danny Nucci, co-owner of The Persian Man, has been spending time in the kitchen with his staff to whip up the perfect colours that will represent the flag of the country that is under attack.

“For every persian, blue or yellow that we sell, 25 cents will go to the Canada Ukraine Foundation for humanitarian aid,” said Nucci. “This will continue throughout the month of April.”

Walter Warywoda, branch president of the League of Ukrainian Canadians, says they are very grateful for the generosity of The Persian Man.

“Every penny helps,” he said. “You can see the destruction and the inhumane conditions that people are fleeing from in the war zone. So if we can help out a little bit, going forward it’s all going to be for a great cause.”

This is not the first time Nucci has cooked up colour combinations for his Persians to be sold as a fundraising initiative. He says next month the colours will change again to support Hospice Northwest in May and again for the Dew Drop Inn later in July.

“For an Italian guy, he’s OK, you know,” laughed Warywoda.

League member Andrea Warywoda added that just like the Thunder Bay community, Nucci also has a big heart and always steps up to support important causes.

“We can count on those big hearts when it comes to supporting this humanitarian crisis because of the war that is happening in Ukraine today,” she said.

The blue and yellow iced persians are available at both Persian Man locations on Tungsten Street and on Balmoral Street for the month of April.
