The family of Eunice Mildred Hamilton (nee Leverance), 94, sadly announces her passing on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2016, in Fort Frances, Ont.
Eunice was born on May 4, 1921 in Fort Frances, the oldest of three children.
She lived in Fort Frances, except during the war years, until 1949. She taught at several public schools in the Fort Frances area.
She met Glen Hamilton while she taught at McIrvine School and they were married in 1943.
During the war, Glen was stationed at various locations in Ontario and Manitoba, first at a bombing and gunnery school and later as a bombing instructor.
In St. Thomas and Belleville, Eunice was a drill press and lathe operator in war plants. In Dauphin, Man., Eunice taught elementary school.
When Glen attended Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont. from 1946-49, Eunice stayed in Fort Frances. In 1949, Eunice and Glen moved to Rainy River, Ont., where Glen taught at the high school until 1951.
Their son, Carl, was born in 1950.
In 1951, the Hamiltons moved to Dryden, Ont., where Glen taught high school for the rest of his career. Eunice supply-taught.
Their daughter, Heather, was born in 1955. Carl died tragically in Austria in 1968.
After retiring, Eunice and Glen spent winters travelling in the southern U.S. and wintered for 12 years in Arizona.
Glen passed away in 1989 and in 1992, Eunice moved from Dryden to Atikokan, Ont. to be near her family. She lived in Atikokan until 2014, when she moved to Rainycrest Long-Term Care in For Frances.
Eunice was very active in the community. She was president of a U.C.W. unit at the Dryden United Church and was a figure skating judge for many years.
She loved the outdoors, exploring, and curling. She also was an avid reader and gardener, and cooking and sewing were her passions. She taught her daughter how to sew and was a great inspiration to many.
She also was a member of the Atikokan Quilt Guild.
Eunice was predeceased by her parents; husband, Glen; son, Carl; brother-in-law, Jim Kirk; and niece, Cathy Thompson.
She is survived by her daughter, Heather (Paul Hosick); grandson, John; granddaughter, Karen (Adam Wigdor); and great-granddaughter, Georgia.
She also is survived by her two sisters, Audrey (Erl Johnson) and Eileen Kirk; as well as nieces, Kathy, Lisa, Peggy, and Janet, and nephew, Robert.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Riverview United Church in Atikokan.
