A number of years ago a movement started for a second ice surface in Fort Frances. Discussions went on and a committee was formed to make it happen. They titled it “Ice For Kids.”
We now have two ice surfaces . With the passing of time three groups have formed which are hockey, figure skating and open ice users. Hockey is the larger group and would represent the largest share of users and age groups. Figure skaters are the second group that would represent a large age group. Open ice users get a small amount of ice time for special occasions, they have no organization to fight for them.
Comparing the age of the first two groups there isn’t much difference. Hockey started in 1952 and figure skating started in 1955.
Not to be clear the Border Figure Skating Club is speaking for all figure skaters and was formed 70 years ago. The Lakers were formed Sept. 17, 2009 and are only a small part of the hockey group in our area. The rest of the hockey group are younger and a larger percentage of the hockey organization formed 73 years ago. Keeping all this in mind the term “Ice For Kids” still is the main theme that guides the organizations.
My point is the Border Figure Skating Club should retain the dressing room with bathroom which they use for their district competitions and annual ice shows. If the Lakers need a larger dressing room get a portable unit at the east end of the arena similar to what the board of education does if they need more classrooms for a school. This way the kids are not affected by the Lakers wants.
