RRFA AGM and Abbatoir Fundraiser on the horizon

Another successful Cattle Sale is behind us. We sold 1544 head for a total of $5,332,698.73. I haven’t taken the time to compare it to our last sale, but I think the prices were a bit softer but still good compared to past years. Like I say every sale, this money is generally spent within the Rainy River District so it is good for our entire community. We continue to work on improving things at our barn with a better catalogue and the information people want to see in it and cattle flow with less confusion for staff and animals. I am sure the need to improve things will continue for many years to come. The weather didn’t cooperate as well this time around and it is hard to keep pens dry and cattle clean when this happens.

I sold some calves this weekend and I was very happy with my prices. I likely should have sold more but I am happy to have a barn full of animals at home for replacements and for feeding. Of course, the rain has made it messy so I am using lots of straw and they have access to the barn. I have been enjoying how happy and comfortable they are as I watch them on the camera. I have moved the lambs around a few times to accommodate everyone. It only took one day of rain to make us go from running shows to rubber boots!

I had a big list of jobs for Sunday after being busy at the Sales Barn for few days. I was thankful that it turned into a nice day but boy are the days short! My cows were hinting that I would move them into a field but with the rain I didn’t want to make a big mess so I spread out some hay for them. They seemed content enough for that. I finally caved and pulled all my flowers and put the pots away. Some of them were still blooming but I didn’t want to wait so long that they would be frozen and unable to get them out of the pots. I recycled some of the material through the sheep and goats but didn’t want to get them sick so I didn’t give it all to them. Getting the feed bunks out of the mud was the biggest challenge I had and it was a struggle. I would get the legs out but then I couldn’t get my feet out of the mud. I moved them inside so that I don’t have to struggle through the mud to feed the calves. It didn’t take them long to figure out how good grain is.

Just a quick reminder that this Saturday is the Rainy River Federation of Agriculture AGM, Dinner and Trivia Night at the Emo Legion! I hope to see you out at that! Then next Saturday, November 1, is the Abattoir Fundraiser Dinner! You really don’t want to miss this fun night of games, prizes and supporting our Abattoir!

If you have cattle for the next sale, November 8 – please continue to reach out to Katie at 807-275-5273. As well, let her know if you are planning to sell any bred animals as we will need to have them preg checked at the Sales Barn!
