Wow, the middle of September has arrived! I am very thankful that the good weather has returned, and it wouldn’t mind if this stayed until Christmas! I had a busy week at work, and I am even more excited that this week I will have a helper! I have high priority to get the winter wheat trial in the ground and perhaps get some canola off. There is a big tile project in Rainy River at Jesse Tait’s that we will be floating over our combine to harvest some test strips of canola. I am nervous about it, but I am sure we will make it all work. I have a lot of data to get entered but I am holding off working on that stuff until the weather isn’t so great.
Lexi has been on mediation now for a week for her skin allergy. She seems to be feeling much better. I must tell you if you have a pet that doesn’t like taking pills be sure to get yourself some “pill pockets!” That has made a world of difference.
Last week my mom celebrated her 76th birthday and we had made it last a bit longer by celebrating multiple times. On her actual birthday (Thursday) we had a small appetizer night, then we had a nice supper for her on Friday night, but I will say she had to help with that because we decided to have prime rib, and she had to get that started before we all were off work! She didn’t mind. I think the highlight of her birthday was an enjoyable pontoon ride around Off Lake. My friend Ted offered to take her, Auntie Denise and Beannie (who celebrate their birthdays this week) for the boat cruise. They loved it! Auntie Denise spent a lot of time on Off Lake as their family had a cabin there years ago. We were not expecting this but then Debbie prepared supper for us, so this was a real treat!
Since my pasture is near finished I opted to put some old hay out for my cows. They were not super excited about the hay so either it is poor hay, or they are not as hungry as I get into my mind. I was thinking of holding off selling calves until the middle of October Sale but if you look at current prices it looks as though most weight classes are bringing similar total dollars. So perhaps it would be better to sell the calves and give the cows a longer rest period and time to enjoy the little bit of grass that is left for them. There are always so many big decisions to make in the farm world. I also have my stomach in a knot worrying about preg. checking. I can wake myself up at night thinking about having open cows. I wish I wasn’t this way but I certainly am. I hope everyone can get out and enjoy this weather because I just feel like this is all a big bonus for us all.
Congratulations on the Burger Wars event! I would have loved to attend but we were busy celebrating my mom! I heard awesome things about it – Yay!
