It is great that November has arrived and we can still see grass and bare ground. I know that will change soon enough but I am enjoying it while it lasts. The rain last week really just made things slimy and our roads bumpy. Back my way the graders were out trying to fill in some of the potholes but that rain really messed up what they gained.
I headed off with friends Thursday afternoon to Brandon to cheer on Aaron Bujold and Rustin Chartier who were showing cattle at Manitoba Ag Ex. Both of them did well and our District should be so proud that they had such a great showing. The Hereford show was large and it was a fun afternoon watching the cattle parade around the ring. We were mentioned as the best cheering section! It was a quick trip as we were up early Saturday morning to head home to attend the Abattoir Fundraising Event. Debbie and I had a tag game we wanted to play! We were successful and it profited the abattoir $2,525! Johannes Gerber was the lucky winner and went home with the same amount. The Abattoir Committee once again did an amazing job of hosting the event and it was really impressive to see all the great donations from the good people of our District. Thank you to everyone that contributed, it doesn’t go unnoticed! Thank you to those that attended the event as well. It was great to see so many people supporting the cause because they believe and see the importance of the district having an abattoir. This means a lot to those of us that are growing food every day!
I had a pretty big list planned for Sunday but I ended up spending a good part of the day watching the Muskie Girls. They had an incredible weekend winning the Scott Clendenning tournament. I manage to rush home and sort out the calves that my friend has purchased and hauled them over to his place. I opened up all the gates so that the calves I kept could get out of the corral / shed and on some higher ground but I had to chase them out after work on Monday. The time change is not desirable for working after work. Everything has to be done with a headlamp now. I started to take down a few more of my summer fences and water systems. It looks like they will all need to be put away by the weekend as the day time highs are not looking great. The cattle sale will cut into my farm list this week but this is the last sale for 2025. We are working on cutting back on wages so Katie Hay has prepared a great work list and has been reaching out to everyone so that we don’t end up with too much staff. It isn’t an easy thing to juggle but we are hoping that we can make some slight changes. Minimum wage has increased drastically and though we know that is important it is really noticeable in our small businesses.
