It’s hard to miss this field of sunflowers along the south side of Highway 11/71 just east of Emo. Ten acres of tall, bright yellow sunflowers are growing next door to the Dykstra family house, which were planted by local farmer Harold Kelly, who added there currently is about 100 acres of sunflowers at his farm. Last summer, a field of soybeans could be viewed from the highway in the same plot and Kelly said the sunflowers worked out well with the crop rotation this year, which will be harvested at the end of September for bird seed. Kelly said he likes growing sunflowers because “it’s a nice-looking crop and it’s kind of fun to harvest, too. It’s the best of both worlds.”
