Nolan Mann scored twice and assisted on two others to pace the Muskie boys’ hockey team to a convincing 6-1 win over the two-time defending NorWOSSA champion Sioux Lookout Warriors on Tuesday night at the ’52 Canadians Arena.
Peyton Avis scored and added four assists to also impress offensively for the Muskies, who saw their league-best record improve to 10-0.
Mann, Jacob Albright, Avis and Ashton Cousineau all found the back of the net in the first period to stake the Muskies to a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Josh Ward and Mann then connected in the middle stanza to put Fort High ahead by six.
But Brett McKay spoiled Darian Klem’s shutout bid with 1:07 to go in the frame as he finally put the Warriors (2-7) on the board to trim it to 6-1 after 40 minutes.
But the Muskies buckled down from there to secure the win as neither side found the back of the net in the third period.
Klem was solid when called upon to garner the win in goal over Jessen Bighead of the Warriors.
The Muskies were slated to resume NorWOSSA action this afternoon in Kenora against the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints (6-2), with the outcome not known as of press time.
Then they’ll next be in action this weekend as they compete in the annual Scott Clendenning Memorial Showcase.
The black-and-gold will open play tomorrow morning as they take on the Dryden Eagles at 9:45 a.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena.
Fort High then will face the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints (Kenora) that afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at “The Duke” (Couchiching Arena).
On Saturday, the Muskies will square off against the Red Lake Rams at 8 a.m. before ending play that evening against the Kenora Broncos at 6:30 p.m.
Both games will take place at the ’52 Canadians Arena in Fort Frances.
