The public is invited to make suggestions for the 2002 municipal budget during a public session at the Civic Centre prior to Monday night’s regular council meeting.
“It’s an opportunity for the public to come forward and put in requests for services and facilities,” noted CAO Bill Naturkach.
The meeting will be the first external act of the 2002 budget process. Residents and organizations are being encouraged to attend if they are seeking funding or other aid in 2002.
“For example, we have a formal proposal we send by mail to organizations who seek funding. Certainly any new ones who don’t know the process can come forward,” said Naturkach.
“Once the budget is set, it’s very hard to undo things,” he added.
The public meeting is slated to start at 7 p.m. Suggestions also can be made now by mail, or in person for those who prefer to avoid a public presentation.
Meanwhile, during the committee of the whole meeting, which gets underway Monday at 5:30 p.m. downstairs at the Civic Centre, a proposal to hold a hazardous waste day will be considered.
“There’s a proposal that we participate in a hazardous waste day and contribute $1 per capita,” said Naturkach.
The committee also will consider a proposal to “twin” with a Florida community with a similar population base and economy.
“The issue came out of a January strategic planning session,” said Naturkach. “[It’s for] economic development by way of either tourism, having their citizens vacation here, [or] similarly, we would twin up with their Chamber of Commerce and local businesses and see if there could be any exchange there.”
Also Monday, after sending a letter to Community and Social Services minister John Baird requesting a change of policy regulating representation on the Rainy River District Social Services Administration Board, the committee of the whole officially will receive a formal letter denying the request.
The committee also will receive a project schedule and status update on construction of the Canada Customs and Immigrations facility here.
