Runners in good shape for meet

The Mine Centre School cross-country team had its first meet two weeks ago at Crossroads in Devlin, and they showed good spirit and a good run.
Talbot Johnson took second place in the grade five boys’ division while Tyler Johnson took second among the grade sevens. Emily Potson ran her way to third place in the grade six girls’ division.
In team standings, the grade five boys (Talbot Johnson, Michael Menson, and Dustin Melrose) earned a fourth-place finish while the grade seven boys’ team (Tyler Johnson, Keith Kabatay, and Gerald Morrison) finished fifth.
The team will travel to Thunder Bay this Saturday to compete in the Mid-Canada cross-country run being held there. The team has been using the morning fitness run to practice and are confident about the run on Saturday.

The grade 1/2 and 3/4 classes have been enjoying a special part of their physical education classes–swimming lessons.
In order to add some fun to the phys. ed. class, and help the children to learn proper swimming technique and water safety, the classes will be taking the weekly lessons for about 10 weeks.
The grade 1/2 class travels to Fort Frances on Wednesdays while the 3/4 class goes on Thursdays. If you’d like to join them sometime, contact your child’s teacher at the school.

The school will have visitors this Friday (Oct. 19) as the Northwestern Health Unit will be holding hepatitis B vaccinations for grade seven students as well as kindergarten immunizations.
’Flu shots will be available from 1:30 until 3 p.m. to those who would like them.

Students can look forward to an early dismissal next Tuesday (Oct. 23) at noon. While the kids are enjoying the afternoon off, the teachers will be doing some professional development.

More special visitors will be at the school Thursday, Oct. 25 when the “Spikes” volleyball group arrives. They will be at school to teach kids techniques and skills in the art of volleyball.

Special congratulations go to Phillip Ottertail, who was in the spotlight last week for his outstanding behaviour and work habits at school.

Last but not least is the annual Culture Day at Mine Centre School. Every year, native language teachers get together with other staff, friends, family, and volunteers to put together a day of learning culture.
It is always an enjoyable time, with centres in the morning, a feast at noon, followed by a pow-wow. This year, the big day is slated to be held Friday, Oct. 26.
