Those with aerosol cans, pressurized containers, batteries, old paint cans and other hazardous waste items are being asked by the town to dispose of them during Municipal Hazardous and Special Waste Day this Saturday (Sept. 14).
A contracted waste disposal specialist will be at the Public Works garage located on the corner of Wright Street and Fifth Street from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day.
“There will be people there to take the materials that your bring in and we hope that you think about doing this,” Mayor June Caul stressed at a council meeting on Monday evening.
“We don’t want that stuff ending up in our dump facility, we want to have that hazardous waste dealt with properly,” she added.
Operations and Facilities manager Travis Rob said any spray can of any kind, including insecticides, pesticides, shaving cream, spray oil used in cooking, old fire extinguishers, and propane tanks is considered hazardous waste.
Electronic waste will not be accepted at the Public Works building during Hazardous Waste Day but it can be brought to Asselin’s on Kings Highway in Fort Frances at anytime.
Town CAO Doug Brown said the waste day is for anyone living in the Rainy River District–not just Fort Frances residents–because improper disposal of hazardous waste affects the whole Rainy River watershed.
