Utter disappointment

Dear editor:
First of all, I would like to express my appreciation to trustees Donna Dittaro and Gary Allen for their support in our cause to retain a school bus at Atikokan High School.
They display a clear understanding of, and care for, the needs of the students at AHS—and obviously show a great deal of courage in “bucking the system.”
Thank you!
As for the rest of the trustees of the Rainy River District School Board, I express my complete and utter disappointment at the fact that you, once again, failed to agree to revisit the issue of replacing the bus at your May 1 meeting.
In spite of compelling arguments presented by students, teachers, parents, and Atikokan taxpayers, you mindlessly allowed yourselves to be duped by a short-sighted, arrogant, and irresponsible senior administration.
“There’s none so blind as those who will not see.”
Most disappointing of all, of course, is Atikokan’s own trustee, Judy Eluik, who appears to have completely abandoned the welfare of our students at AHS.
Ms. Eluik has acted totally contrary to the needs and wishes of the Atikokan students, teachers, parents, and taxpayers in this matter. And in spite of numerous requests for an explanation of her stance, she has obstinately remained silent on the subject.
Alas, it seems that we in Atikokan have no representation on the board at all!
It appears that the board and administration believe that the issue is dead and finalized. Let me assure you that it is not going away. The citizens of Atikokan seem to thrive on adversity, and will tenaciously pursue any just cause.
We believe a bus, which has become an integral part of school programming at AHS for more than 35 years, is an essential element—and we will not passively allow unwarranted erosion of such programs.
