Make life better through Volunteer Bureau

Dear editor,

The Fort Frances Volunteer Bureau (FFVB) is a very busy entity in our community. We are a dedicated group of people volunteering our time to help make our community more inclusive to all. For a few years we lacked the bodies to carry out our mandate but slowly we are building back to being an integral and vital resource. As most people know we are housed in the old CN station building, to some the place may look big, but we do an amazing number of things and they all take space. Aside from working with the Family Centre, which is a Warming Centre open to anyone needing a warm meal, or just social time, with books, movies, newspapers, TV and computer available, we also house The Bear Clan, a food bank, item storage for the homeless, meeting room, Vendors market, community coat room and children’s clothes closet. There are shower and laundry facilities for those in need and at times emergency taxi and bus fare. We give friendship and guidance in an all-inclusive, non-judgmental atmosphere along with direction to helpful professional agencies. We supply blankets, towels, kitchen utensils and some furniture for those moving into a new place. We do income tax for the low income citizens in the district. We run Covid vaccine clinics and flu shot clinics, and have weekly visits by nurses and nurse practitioners. We have a close working relationship with the Mobile Crisis Unit and the OPP. The FFVB is always looking for more volunteers, so we can be even more relevant in our community. We would like to become more involved once again in events like the Santa Clause parade, the Community Christmas Dinner, the Terry Fox Run etc. Our success going forward depends on, as it always has, the continued generous support from district individuals and businesses. This holiday, please take the time to think about the day-to-day struggles of the less fortunate in our community and help us to continue our mission of helping them by making a cash donation to the FFVB. Every dollar goes toward making someone’s life better.

PS: Tax receipts available.

Thank you.
