We need to know

Diana Coulumbe

Dear editor,

COVID cases are rising in Northwestern Ontario communities. I find it very disturbing the NWHU seems reluctant to let people in our communities know which ones are of concern, but rather chooses to clump communities together as ‘regions’ on their website. The Rainy River District has 31 communities listed under their jurisdiction. Perhaps utilizing The Thunder Bay District Health Unit model might be something to consider as it is far more transparent. It not only refers to the venues where this pandemic shows up but includes the dates and times people might have frequented them and the level of concern of transmission. My community is small and at this point, as far as I know, has no current cases. Many people in small communities, like it or not, are rather cavalier and inconsistent about protection. If COVID is detected here, I am sure citizens will become more vigilant. But until it is indicated they do so, I doubt most will. Bottom line: WE NEED TO KNOW precisely where the COVID is showing up so we can protect ourselves, our loved ones and our communities. So, if the NWHU is serious about curbing COVID here, perhaps they need to become more transparent and trust our citizens to step up safety measures in our homes and communities by keeping us better informed.

Thank you and please stay safe.

Diana Coulombe,
