December 16, 2020 – Northern Policy Institute’s (NPI) Experience North program is now accepting applications for youth looking to join the NPI team this upcoming summer.
Going into its eighth year, Experience North is geared towards students looking for crucial hands-on experience. Since 2014, the program has helped young professionals build capacity through partner relations, applied research, and real-world policy making. Some youth learn first-hand about the cut and thrust of public policy debate. Others explore the inner workings of a not-for-profit.
These new professionals also get to provide their perspectives and fresh ideas on how to support the growth of sustainable Northern communities. The 16-week placements run from May to August of 2021 and are located at host organizations across Northern Ontario.
This program supports NPI’s mission to engage local communities and provide evidence-based analysis for effective decision making in Ontario’s northern regions. At the end of the summer, our policy placements will have developed research and analytical skills as well as a stronger understanding of issues facing Northern Ontario. Our communications and operations students will be ready and able to practice their craft at any charity or not-for-profit in the North, or elsewhere.

NPI is offering ten Experience North opportunities this year:
- Thunder Bay – Finance and Accounting Officer (1); Administration and Operations Officer (1)
- Sioux Lookout – Policy Analysts (2)
- Sault Ste. Marie – Design and Marketing Officer (1); Outreach and Events Officer (1)
- Hearst – Policy Analysts (2)
- Kirkland Lake – Policy Analysts (2)
Candidates must normally be eligible under the Canada Summer Jobs Program. Criteria for that program currently includes that candidates: be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment; be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
