Some area students will have to forsake the luxury of sleeping in starting Monday in favour of sharpening their minds as summer school gets underway here, in Emo, and Atikokan.
Warren Hoshizaki, director of education for the Rainy River District School Board, noted how glad he was to see everything finally come together.
“I think it’s a real good alternative for students who need a little extra work to prepare them for high school,” he remarked.
As of last week, 14 grade eight students from Fort Frances will be going to Robert Moore for a half-day program of mathematics and English instruction five days a week until July 30.
Likewise, a combined 10 from Rainy River and Emo will be heading off to Donald Young School while another 14 in Atikokan will go to the high school there.
The teachers also have been lined up, including Cameron Keast (Robert Moore), Trevor Bowles (Donald Young), and Cheryl Williams (AHS).
Principals also will be at the schools during teaching days.
Due to the unreasonable cost of busing, parents will be responsible for transporting their children to and from school. But those who live in the west end of the district will receive a travel subsidy from the public school board.
The board already has talked to parents, handling it on a case by case basis. This subsidy was made possible by an extra $2,000 from the board.
The Ministry of Education and Training made money available in May to prepare grade eight students who may not be ready for the new high school curriculum.
