A local town councillor is urging the public to get out and vote in the federal election.
“I want to simply take a minute to encourage residents to take the time and make a plan to vote, whether you do so in advance or on Oct. 21,” said Coun. Douglas Judson during Monday evening’s council meeting.
“In the last two elections in 2018, we had a local turnout rate of just over 50 percent and I think we can do better,” he added.
Each of the four major parties have put forward a candidate in the riding who and they’ve been out campaigning door-to-door, as well as online, to make their voices heard.
“I want to thank those individuals and their teams of volunteers for their contributions to the process, because I know that it takes courage and conviction to step up to the plate and that we live in a challenging riding to campaign across and represent effectively,” Coun. Judson noted.
“Already we are seeing a significant campaign presence here in Fort Frances, and that is to be commended,” he noted.
“I do encourage people to pay particular attention to those in their midst who may have some mobility challenges or otherwise struggle to get themselves out to their polling station, and make sure they have an opportunity to participate,” said Coun. Judson.
Coun. Judson says the number of national, international, and global challenges that have a local impact are growing–whether it’s climate change or the threat of mining activity in the boundary waters area here.
“With those issues in mind, your vote is important, and I hope that everyone will make time over the next month to educate themselves on the candidates and their platforms and to get out there and vote,” he remarked.
The local Elections Canada Office is located at 540 King’s Highway, in Unit B of the Rainy Lake Plaza, and it’s open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
