Library kicks off summer programs

With everything from the wild west to a Hawaiian luau, the Fort Frances Public Library has a number of events planned this summer to encourage kids to drop by and read.
“It’s nice having drop-in programs so that if it is raining or you need a little activity, you can come by the library,” Andrea Avis of the children’s department said this morning.
Each Tuesday at 2 p.m., children aged six and over can drop by for arts and crafts. Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. will be story time for kids aged two and up—complete with stories and finger rhymes.
Both of these weekly activities are free and don’t require pre-registration.
On Thursday afternoons, the children’s department will hold its theme days—featuring everything from the wild west to a pajama party, a Hawaiian luau to a “Survivor” day.
Children do have to pre-register for these Thursday activities, and they sometimes come with a $2 charge to cover costs of hosting the events.
Parents can call 274-9870 to sign up for the activities, but they can only sign up one week in advance.
Avis said the children’s department can average 100 children a day coming through their doors and that seeing so many young faces repeatedly definitely is uplifting.
“[Coming to the library] creates that comfort zone that they are comfortable coming her and confident in what to expect during the school years,” she noted.
“They will also know that in coming to the library, they will find a friendly face and someone to give them help when they need it.”
