The Fort Frances landfill charges $72.80 per metric tonne, with a minimum charge of $18 per load. But on Saturday, May 14, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., all garden waste can be dumped at no cost.
Free Tipping Day is for garden waste only. This includes leaves, tree branches, grass clippings, and more.
Operations and facilities manger Travis Rob says people usually like to prepare in advance to dispose of their waste.
“It’s very well received,” says Rob. “It’s a great thing for community members to be able to take advantage of.”
On these free days, the landfill generally receives lots of garden waste. Rob says the Ministry allows the landfill to burn the wood waste in controlled conditions.
Free Tipping Day happens twice a year to help deal with cleanup in the spring, and raking in the fall. The next free day is scheduled for Nov. 5.
