Earliest ‘ice-out’ on record

A combination of above-normal temperatures and Sunday’s windy conditions resulted in “ice-out” on the north arm of Rainy Lake as of yesterday (April 9), which is the earliest date on record.
“Ice-out” occurred on May 2 last year and on April 12 in 2010, which at the time was the earliest on record.
Meanwhile, the U.S. side declared “ice-out” on Good Friday (April 6).
“Ice-out” there means it is possible to travel by boat from Island View to Kettle Falls unimpeded by ice.
Last year, “ice-out” was declared May 2.
