The world has been watching with shock and concern since the February 24 invasion of Ukraine by Russian president Vladimir Putin. It is still going on today, with innocent civilians being injured and killed.
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy is being honoured as an excellent leader of the country, with a deep pride for his country, who is fighting for what his people believe in, and is refusing to hand over Ukraine to Russia.
Our region has one of the highest populations of Ukrainian descendants in all of Ontario. Regardless of when their families came, and how connected they are to Ukraine, their heritage is a source of deep pride, whether it’s the strong work ethic of the Ukraine or their ties to the culture and traditions.
Every day people around the world wake up, hoping and praying today the war in the Ukraine will end. This is even more heart felt by the Ukrainian people.
Their love and pride for Ukraine is to be admired by all.
There is a sentence in Ukrainian’s national emblem that reads “Upon us fellow Ukrainians, fate shall smile once more.” And this the Ukrainian people believe this to be true!
I’ve had the great privilege to talk, share memories, heritage, culture and an over abundance of love for Ukraine, with several residents of our district over the past weeks. This is what they have shared with me.
