The Northwestern Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program committee announced Wednesday that Aug. 15 is the deadline for submitting official claim forms for damages caused during last month’s flooding.
“Claim processing has already begun,” said committee chair Nick Wihnan. “I urge everyone who has not already submitted their claim to do so before the deadline.”
Ian Mollett, manager of the disaster relief office here, said about $1,250,000 in losses have been claimed by a total of 254 claimants as of Wednesday afternoon.
“Some claims are under $1,000 while others have been in the several thousand dollar range,” he noted.
Mollett did not have the breakdown on which parts of the district saw what percentage of claims so far.
Those who received an advance payment are required to submit an official claim form—even if they are not making a further claim. Mollett said about $230,000 in advance payments have been dispensed so far.
Claimants without all of the necessary documentation, including receipts or estimates, are asked to file their claim by the deadline with the information they have available.
The district ODRAP committee appointed Cunningham Lindsey Canada Ltd. as adjusters for processing the claims, and they will begin their work here today, said Mollett.
“The first areas they’ll be going are the ones that are in the most need, such as people who haven’t been able to live in their own homes,” he remarked.
Claims can be mailed, faxed, or submitted in person at the ODRAP office (400 B Scott St.) on Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
