District residents truly were in the spirit of giving the “gift of life” this week, donating more blood to the Canadian Blood Services’ clinic here than organizers had sought.
Some 412 pints of blood were donated—exceeding the two-day quota of 385 by 27.
“That’s the first time we broke the 400 mark since May, 1999,” clinic co-ordinator Marnee Miller said Friday morning.
Some 173 donors went to the Fort Frances High School gym on Wednesday, beating that day’s quota of 135. Thursday drew another 239, falling a little short of the daily quota of 250.
Miller noted Dryden saw a total of 401 donors at the its recent clinic.
So why was the turnout so good this time around?
“The weather wasn’t good. People couldn’t work outside so they came to give blood,” chuckled Miller.
A second blood donor clinic is slated for September here.
The May, 2001 blood donor clinic saw 369 donors—one short of its quota of 370.
The blood donor clinics are co-ordinated by the La Verendrye General Hospital Auxiliary.
