If you’re looking to win yourself an exciting trip in 2021, it’s important to know a local draw is doing things a bit differently.
Tickets are now on sale for the Fort Frances Kiwanis Club’s annual Trip of the Month draw, which has traditionally seen one lucky winner each month win an exciting trip to a destination from across the globe. However, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic having closed down most international travel options, the Kiwanis Club has had to do some outside-the-box thinking when it came to destinations they could offer.
“COVID-19 has affected us all in many different and possibly unique ways,” said Kiwanian Robin Wright.
“Although there have fortunately not been many positive cases locally in the Rainy River District, many of us may have family and friends who have been affected in some way. With that in mind, and with the support of the Town of Fort Frances, which provides the Kiwanis Club with a lottery license through the club’s Charitable Trust, the Kiwanis decided to shake the trips up for 2021. The Kiwanis Club is very pleased to offer 12 monthly draws with travel locations exclusively in Canada,” she said.
The trips, chosen with the assistance of Paula Jensen of Peace of Mind Travel in Fort Frances, highlight the diversity and wonders of the country in an assortment of unique and exiting travel opportunities for almost any taste. Included in the possible wins are skiing packages and horseback trail rides in Banff, 14-day Atlantic self-drive trip, a stay in the Quebec Ice Hotel and more.
“Canada is vast and truly exceptional with locations in all provinces and territories that would appeal to most,” Wright said.
“With the unknown of when foreign travel may open, travel within Canada is likely to be available sooner than other destinations. Any past winners in 2020 who have not been able to complete their trip are also able to use their win towards a Canadian adventure if they so desire.”
Like Trip of the Month draws in past years, winners of any of the 2021 draws are still able to put the monetary value of their trip towards a different destination, though it cannot be redeemed for any cash value. Additionally, like in previous years, the winners have 12 months from the date of the draw to redeem their trip, though Wright notes that the Town of Fort Frances has afforded them some wiggle room in that regard.
“With COVID-19 continuing to be with us and with no known end in sight at this time, the Town of Fort Frances has allowed the Kiwanis Club to have some flexibility in the requirement to book a trip within the 12 month period following the winning ticket being drawn,” he said.
“The club anticipates that when travel again is allowed, many winners might take the opportunity to travel within Canada, which is anticipated will open for business prior to any foreign travel. “
The cost of each ticket is $120, with proceeds from the ticket sales in the past going towards supporting the community and other organizations, such as Sunny Cove Camp, the Salvation Army and the Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre, among others.
“The Kiwanis Club as a volunteer organization has also been affected directly through the Trip of the Month draw, and with their efforts to support our many local organizations,” Wright said.
“The club continues to use their volunteer time to support things like Meals on Wheels, the Salvation Army Christmas Hampers and Backpack program as well as the Rainy River District 4H and other area youth projects.”
As the uncertainties surrounding COVID and its impact on international travel remain, there is still a chance that at some point in the new year winners might be able to put their trip towards a dream beach vacation in an exotic land. However, even if that can’t be, the 2021 Trip of the Month draw will likely still have an exciting Canadian destination that will grow and expand your understanding and appreciation of the varied and distinct country we live in.
Tickets for the 2021 Kiwanis Club Trip of the Month draw are available from club members and at Lidkea Optometry and IG Wealth Management. For more information on the draw or the Fort Frances Kiwanis Club, speak with a club member or email
