Emo to hold smoking meeting

Emo council is hosting a meeting on the issue of smoking in public places tomorrow (May 23) at 7 p.m. at the Emo-La Vallee Community Centre.
Geoff Gillon, economic development officer for the Rainy River Future Development Corp.’s, will chair the meeting.
For those who can’t make the meeting, signed written submissions will be accepted at the Emo municipal office until 4 p.m. tomorrow. Three people already have submitted their written views.
Those wishing to speak at the meeting may do so.
Council wants to have a clear idea on where Emo residents stand on the issue before voting on a bylaw.
“Let’s hear from all the people,” Emo Reeve Russ Fortier said at council’s regular meeting May 1.
“It would be nice to have the municipality in agreement,” added Coun. Doug Hodge.
Emo is one of many district municipalities weighing a request from the Northwestern Health Unit to implement a bylaw banning smoking in all enclosed public places.
Dr. Pete Sarsfield, CEO and chief medical officer of health of the health unit, has asked municipalities to make a decision on the bylaw by the end of May.
