A new month, a new cause

To say that the first month or so of the Step Forward campaign has exceeded my expectations would be a massive understatement.
People both near and far have made it known that they are good-hearted folks who want to lend a hand to those less fortunate.
The result has been exactly $1,500 raised so far for the United Native Friendship Centre Food Bank.
I honestly would have been happy with any amount raised to help feed those in our area who rely on the food bank to make sure they and their loved ones have enough to eat on a daily basis.
But to bring in what has been donated so far says a lot about the people I know and where their priorities lie and it’s great to see.
I will still be posting the link for UNFC Food Bank up until July 7 if you were waiting to sponsor me based on my number of steps so far, which have also exceeded what I thought I could do.
However, with the turning of the calendar also comes a fresh local organization to help.
For July, it will be Rainy River District Victim Services, a small, but admirable group of people who provide comfort in others’ time of need.
Those others I speak of are those who bear the brunt of physical, verbal and emotional abuse at the hands of those they thought they could trust who turned out to be anything but that.
As has been detailed before, my mother was the recipient of various forms of abuse at the hands of her first husband, before she met my father and before I was born.
She suffered for several years through the storms of her spouse’s alcoholism and violent temperament before gathering the courage to leave him behind, but doing it on her own without a support network was one of the toughest things she has ever gone through.
RRVDS is there to provide that support for those in the local area seeking solace from nightmarish situations of abuse and dehumanization.
I hope that the help that all of us together can provide will help RRVDS continue with the great and important work that they do throughout our district.
It’s the right thing to do and it will make a huge difference in the lives of those who deserve the opportunity to live without fear and oppression.
Please lend a hand if you can. Let’s “Step Forward” yet again.
