No accountability

Last Wednesday as my wife and I travelled to Rainy River dropping off papers at stores and restaurants along the way, we were tuned into the radio listening the testimony of Robert Muelller who was asked to investigate claims that there was Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.
Near the end of the testimony, Mueller clearly stated that the Russians were already involved in the upcoming U.S. elections.
He added that there were more foreign countries working to sway voters in the coming state and national elections.
The Mueller report noted that the Russian government had over 400 people working from a central office building in Russia appearing as everyday concerned citizens in the U.S. Social media stalking and false information can come from anywhere in the world and even appear local.
Thursday in the Washington Post, there was a posting that the U.S. government had uncovered hundreds of fake Facebook and Twitter accounts that appeared American, but in fact were being operated out of Iran.
They were already putting out false information about candidates in the coming U.S elections.
We know as a fact that the July 2016 Brexit vote to withdraw Britain from the European Common Union had a foreign country meddling and probably created the end result. Russia has been accused of being behind that interference.
It has me wondering if unknowingly we are already being targeted by foreign countries to determine the outcome of our coming national election. Are the Chinese–with whom we are already involved in a trade war—-interfering, hacking our internet systems and antagonizing voters?
Are foreigners trying to line us up as tribal units favouring one ideology over another.
Are foreigners working to choose winning candidates in nominations and the eventual national election?
I wonder at times what are true and accurate postings on Twitter or Facebook that are being shared by people who I have included as friends.
What is true about national leaders? What is false about political party policies reposted from unknown sources?
I would hope that our national government is working overtime to shut down fake sites. I would hope that citizens in Canada would report to the RCMP or the OPP sites or postings that they suspect of being false and the messages being false. But I am not confident that we would become activists in protecting our democratic process.
Social media has created huge, new issues in our elections.
Historically, traditional media newspapers, magazines, radio, and television could be held accountable for the accuracy of the stories and advertisements those mediums delivered.
Today, social media requires no accountability.
