Looking for the light

One year ago, we were in a lockdown, but optimistic that life would return to normal in a few months. Covid-19 deaths were declining, and infections were declining through August. We could see the end of the tunnel and felt life would return to normal soon.

Then we watched through November and December as cases and deaths increased and just before Christmas we were once again in a lockdown which lasted through to the end of January. The goal posts moved. Canada began administering vaccines to Canadians to end the pandemic. We were hopeful. Maybe there was light at the end of the tunnel.

And just after Good Friday, we once again were placed in a “Shutdown”. There is not a great deal of difference from being in the “Red Zone”. Restrictions are placed on the number of shoppers in nonessential and essential businesses. Indoor and outdoor dining is once again prohibited. Barber shops and beauty salons as well as exercise gyms are shuttered for at least 28 days. The goal posts have moved again. And we wonder, “is there a light at the end of the tunnel yet?”

Vaccines continue to be administered and anyone over the age of 70 can book an appointment to receive their first vaccine dose. This week, more than 2.2 million doses of vaccine will be delivered to Canada.

We are now learning that new versions of the Covid virus have been discovered in Canada and are more transmissible and are more likely to be caught by children and young adults than the original virus. And it is hoped that the currant versions of the vaccine will be effective against these new strains of the virus.

This is the third wave of the Covid-19 virus.

These new Covid virus versions are already putting a strain on hospitals across Canada, filling Intensive Care Units and exhausting staffs. In Toronto hospitals, the number of ICU patients is now greater than in the previous lockdown. Schools continue to remain open in Ontario. Can we see a light at the end of this tunnel?

Are the goal posts moving again to a time when life as we used to know it will return? Will we be facing a fourth wave of the virus, more virulent than any of the first three, as some scientists are reporting? Will wearing a face mask become a permanent article of clothing year-round? Will we be getting a booster shot annually to protect us against the Covid virus annually?
