Future leaders in green energy

I recently spoke with two young graduates from university about what they viewed their beginning career moves. One looked to go on to post grad studies for a law degree to develop green energy policies for the future.
The other was looking to begin his engineering career in developing green energy projects.
Green energy comes from natural sources such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, plants, algae and geothermal heat.
These energy resources are renewable, meaning they’re naturally replenished.
Green energy projects can also include carbon sequestration.
Green energy is still in its infancy.
One can see that the interests of the world are having an impact on our graduates.
New energy fields are opening up every day. New policies have to be written controlling these new processes.
Does capturing CO2 and burying it hundreds of metres below the surface in basalt or limestone rock cause new problems?
In Saskatchewan, they are seeing success in burying carbon.
The University of Georgia has developed a starch to convert yellow pine into ethanol. Corn is converted to ethanol and sugar cane in Brazil is converted to ethanol and mixed with fuel.
Both are considered renewable energy resources.
Ethanol from our trees would also be considered a renewable resource.
The Terrace Bay mill now converts wood fibre to cellulose and then to rayon which will be used for the manufacture of clothing in India which in turn is sold back to North America.
Researchers all over the world are looking at ways to bury C02–the fizz in sparkling water–which is known as carbon sequestration. We know that carbon is captured in growing plants and finds its way into the ground.
Forests all over the world are capturing carbon dioxide from the air and then storing it.
Some researchers have estimated that if collectively we planted a billion new trees a year, global warming could be reduced by two degrees Celsius in the next 100 years.
Lumber to build homes is actually a form of carbon sequestration.
If a tree dies in the forest and then rots, the carbon that it has captured then is released back into the air. Modern farming practices also are a form of carbon sequestration as the roots replenish the carbon in the soil and aid in the breakdown of minerals in the soil.
Green energy science is a developing new industry attracting new youth and energy.
This new generation will be the leaders in the field.
