Man killed by tree

On Tuesday around 8:30 a.m., Rainy River District OPP officers and the OPP Northwest Region Emergency Response Team responded to a call in Quetico Provincial Park.
The officers attended with the assistance of the Ministry of Natural Resources’ helicopter.

Officers were informed that a male was unresponsive after a tree had fallen on him.
An investigation revealed a group of canoers were camping at Point Lake at the time of the incident.
A storm had passed through the area, causing a large portion of a tree to fall—striking one of the males while he was sleeping in his tent.
Life-saving attempts were made by other members of the camping group but were unsuccessful.
The male died as a result of injuries sustained in the incident.
The deceased was identified as Charles Emerson Showalter, 63, of Wheeling, W. Va.
The investigation was concluded, with a post-mortem being conducted at the Lake of the Woods Hospital in Kenora.
