Gastro-intestinal illness hits hospital

In conjunction with the Northwestern Health Unit, Riverside Health Care Facilities, Inc. has declared an outbreak of a gastro-intestinal illness on the first floor of La Verendrye General Hospital here.
Seven patients and four staff members have symptoms consistent with a stomach virus, including nausea and diarrhea.

Riverside has taken several steps to help patients and staff, and keep the illness from spreading.
These include:
•isolating patients with symptoms and postponing group activities;
•sending affected staff members home until they are symptom-free for 48 hours; and
•aggressive cleaning throughout the first floor.
Riverside will review the status of the outbreak on an ongoing basis.
The in-patient unit must be free of new cases for two days before an outbreak can be lifted in consultation with Northwestern Health Unit.
Colds, influenza, and stomach viruses are especially common in the community at this time of year.
Anyone going to a hospital to visit should do so only when they’re feeling well, while washing and sanitizing their hands regularly before, during, and after a visit.
Potential visitors with symptoms of a cold, influenza, or a stomach virus are advised to stay home and not enter a hospital until they’ve been free of symptoms for two days.
