Redgut edges Lady Raiders
Those who do not learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat them.
That classic adage was on full display in the late stages of last night’s Rainy River District Women’s Fastball League playoff game between the top-ranked Redgut Babes and third-seeded Couchiching Lady Raiders.
With one out, Micaela Jack reached second base when left-fielder Misty Perreault misplayed a sinking fly ball off her glove.
Ange Bruyere then stepped up and hit a grounder that second baseman Jess Mainville had bounce off her foot and skip into right field, allowing Perreault to come around and make it 4-3.
After Couchiching pitcher Darcy Smith fanned Caroline Chartrand, Shana Windigo hit another grounder that Mainville struggled to pick up, then threw wide past first baseman Darcy Jones.
Jones scrambled after the ball and tried to nail Bruyere at home but her throw sailed well up the third-base line, allowing Bruyere to score easily.
Couchiching put two runners on in their last at-bat in the seventh.
But Redgut hurler Lynn Windigo capped off a complete-game five-hitter by catching Perreault looking for the pitcher’s 12th strikeout of the game to go along with her 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
The win sends Redgut into a semi-final match-up at home against the Fort Frances Herricanes on Thursday.
The Lady Raiders, meanwhile, will tangle in the other semi-final versus the Big Grassy Lynx.
The Lynx ended the season for Sabaskong by whipping the Cougars 22-8.
Karma Andy got the win for Big Grassy while Clarissa Copenace was tagged with the loss.
The losers of Thursday’s semi-finals play will play Aug. 26 in the ‘B’ final.
The winners will meet in the ‘A’ final Aug. 29.
