ELA needs action, not letters: MPP

Local MPP Sarah Campbell is calling on the province to go beyond jurisdictional excuses and commit to a serious effort to save the freshwater research station known as the Experimental Lakes Area.
“Ten days from now, the Experimental Lakes Area is scheduled to close as a result of the federal Conservatives’ war on science,” Campbell noted yesterday during Question Period in the legislature.

“Every time I have raised this issue in the House, we’re assured the province is opposed to this short-sighted and politically-motivated decision,” she said.
“However, we’ve yet to hear what concrete steps this government willing to take to prevent the closure of this important research facility.”
Last week, the federal government began dismantling buildings at the world-renowned research centre—despite saying it was trying to find a group or organization willing to take over the facility.
“Yesterday [Wednesday] in the House of Commons, my federal New Democratic colleagues used an Opposition Day motion in an attempt to prevent this closure, but it was defeated by a Conservative majority intent on muzzling scientists and ending research on the environment,” charged Campbell.
“This is about ground-breaking research, not partisan politics, and people are looking to this provincial government for action, not more letter-writing,” she stressed.
